Mindmapping was developed in the 60's by Tony Buzan. It's
a tremendously flexible note taking system that honors how most
people really think!
Most of us try to follow the recommended project path:
- Define the Problem
- List the Potential Solutions
- Select the best solution, and finally
- Implement the selected solution.
Unfortunately, most teams leap from step 1 to step 3 and
finally to 4 without investing sufficient resources (time and
attention primarily) to Step 2. Skipping Step 2 however pretty
much guarantees having to revisit Step 1 again, maybe more than
once!
Mindmapping allows an individual or a team to "dump" all of the
immediate information (suggestions, facts, references, comments,
etc) into a single document and then easily organize the data over
and over until the final result is visually evident to everyone.
This exercise will allow the less verbal members of your team to
contribute in a meaningful way. This methodology
allows everything to be heaped in a visual pile and then
prioritized, sorted and discussed. The end result is a well
thought out solution that's documented thoroughly and easily
turned into the more common Outline.
